Dear Families and Community Members,
As we prepare to welcome our students back for another wonderful school year, we want to share an important update regarding a new safety measure at Punxsutawney Area Elementary School. New metal detectors have been installed at designated entrances as part of our ongoing commitment to providing a safe, secure, and welcoming learning environment for every student and staff member.
The first day of school is Wednesday, August 26. Students will see the metal detectors when they arrive, but the detectors will not be in use until Tuesday September 1st, when we will finish out that week initiating the process. We are intentionally providing these first few days as an opportunity (soft start) for students to become familiar with the equipment and understand what the arrival process will look like. During this time, each classroom will have an opportunity to visit the screening area, learn about the equipment, review expectations, and ask questions. Our goal is for students to feel comfortable and confident with the process before screening begins. We want this to feel like a normal part of their school routine, not something that causes worry or anxiety.
A Quick Backpack Check Can Help
We encourage families to take a few minutes to check backpacks, bags, and jacket pockets with their children before they leave home. Students should not bring items that are prohibited by school rules, including:
- Weapons or items that could be considered weapons
- Knives, pocketknives, or other sharp objects
- Fireworks or explosive materials
- Vapes, electronic cigarettes, tobacco products, or other prohibited substances
- Metal water bottles
- Any other item prohibited by the Student Code of Conduct
It is also helpful to check for everyday items that may have accidentally been left in a backpack or jacket pocket. A quick check at home can help students move through the morning entry process smoothly and efficiently.
We understand that any new procedure can bring questions, particularly for our youngest students. Please know that we will take the time to teach this process, answer questions, and support our students every step of the way. Our staff will be present to guide students, and we will work to make the transition as calm, positive, and comfortable as possible.
Ultimately, this is about one thing: providing a safe place where our students can learn, grow, and feel cared for each day. We appreciate your partnership, understanding, and continued support as we work together to make PAES a safe and welcoming place for every child.
